Akihabara is a popular place for tourism. In addition to being "The world's best place to shop for electronics", and "The birth place of otaku culture", it also has another identity, "a holy ground for B-grade gourmet food."
With a mix of up and coming, new restaurants, and old, long established restaurants, there are still very few foreign tourists who know how interesting the Akihabara restaurant scene is.
On this page, from standard B-grade Japanese food like, soba, ramen, and tempura, to junk hamburgers, is a carefully selected list of "truly delicious restaurants" for every gourmet visiting Akihabara.
When you're sight seeing in Tokyo, don't just look for SONY, Panasonic, AKB 48, and maid cafes. Treat yourself to the experience of Akihabara's charming gourmet food!
1. Soba Udon Akiba
This soba restaurant is located a 5-minute walk from JR Akihabara Station.
At first glance it looks like any old soba restaurant with a very plain design, but the soba that they serve is on another level.
The delicious and fragrant soba noodles, made in-house every day by the talented owner who has worked at a Michelin one-star restaurant, are an absolute treat.
At this time of year it can be a bit chilly early on in the day, so a bowl of "Tsukimi Soba (360 yen)" can warm you up nicely before you go shopping.
One of the toppings, "Shungiku (Chrysanthemum) Tempura," has a pleasant bitter flavor to it. Even though you may have already had breakfast at your hotel, this meal is sure to settle well.

2. Marugo
This tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) restaurant is located in the heart of Akihabara, the Electric Town.
As expected of a famous restaurant in Tokyo, there's always a long line around lunchtime, but the delicious food here is absolutely worth the wait!
Our recommendation is the "Toku Rosu-Katsu Teishoku (2250 yen)."
The pork is fried for a long while at a low temperature, resulting in tender and juicy meat.
It also pairs beautifully with the rich, thick, and slightly sweet tonkatsu sauce.
Having a filling meal of fragrant white rice and delicious tonkatsu before heading out for an evening stroll is a real delight!

The tempura is fried to order in Japan's finest sesame oil, resulting in a light texture that doesn't sit heavily in your stomach.

This is a great stop to make for beer and snacks in the afternoon when you're getting hungry.
They offer eight varieties of barrel draft beers every day at just 680 yen per glass.
If you're new to craft beers, a popular choice is their "White Ale," which is a light wheat beer with a faint aroma of spices.

6. Kanda Matsuya
If you're looking for THE Japanese food experience, look no further than "Kanda Matsuya," a long-standing soba restaurant that has been in business for over 130 years.
The restaurant's interior is wooden, giving off the vibe of good old Tokyo, and the hand-made soba there is certainly something special.
Out of the over 30 dishes available on their menu, our top recommendation is their "Tempura Soba (2000 yen)," which is topped with 2 enormous tempura-fried tiger prawns.
Of course, the soba is also deliciously fragrant, but their dipping sauce is also incredibly delicious, packed with umami flavors and beautifully suited to the fried tempura coating.

8. Shimonya Akihabara
The first thing you should do in the evening, when Akihabara turns into an every-man's drinking area, is to get a drink yourself.
"Shimonya" is a popular izakaya among local salarymen thanks to their fresh kushiyaki (skewers) at reasonable prices.
Almost everyone who stops by orders Shimonya's staple dish, "Motsunikomi (350 yen)," which is best enjoyed alongside a "Kinmiya Ume-wari (350 yen)," which is made by mixing Kinmiya shochu with ume (Japanese plum) syrup.
The pairing of the salty motsunikomi and the slightly sweet shochu is amazing!

9. Tankiyo
When it comes to dinner, filling up on meat at yakiniku restaurant "Tankiyo" is a popular choice for its great value.
Our recommended order here is their signature "Ue-tan Shioyaki (2000 yen)," salt-grilled beef tongue.
The tongue is grilled up on a wire mesh before your eyes, and its amazingly tender texture is irresistible.
If you're hungry for more, their "Harami-yaki (900 yen)," grilled skirt steak, is another great choice.
Tankiyo takes such pride in their harami-yaki, deliciously juicy when you bite into it, that anyone would turn into a yakiniku lover after giving it a try.

The best way to wrap up your day in Akihabara is at "Daiki," a ramen restaurant that opened up its Akihabara location in 2017.
It is a super-famous restaurant, once lauded as the #1 ramen restaurant in Japan.
When you visit, you absolutely should order their signature "Tori-soba (850 yen)."
The soup is simple, but the deep umami flavors from the chicken broth makes for a truly delicious soup.
The broth also goes beautifully with the thin noodles, served al dente.
